Building Smile Obsession from a Single Startup Office
Smile Obsession was not built through private equity, corporate consolidation, or the acquisition of a large established dental chain.
It started with a single startup dental office in Glenview during the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic.
When the original dentist who opened the practice decided he no longer wanted to continue moving forward with the startup, Dr. Viren Patel stepped in and acquired the newly opened office. At the time, the practice was still in its infancy and not fully built out.
Dr. Patel completed the office buildout, invested in the equipment and infrastructure needed to operate successfully, retained the original dentist, and began building the operational systems, patient experience model, and long term vision that would eventually become Smile Obsession.
From that single startup location, Smile Obsession grew organically into a multi location dentist owned dental group serving patients throughout the Chicagoland area.
Every aspect of the organization, from the systems and culture to the patient experience and growth strategy, was built from the ground up.
Learning what Modern Dentistry Should Be – and Shouldn't Be
Before building Smile Obsession into what it is today, Dr. Viren Patel previously owned and operated a successful private dental practice that was later sold to a private equity backed dental organization.
During the three years that followed, Dr. Patel gained firsthand experience inside a large corporate dental model. While the experience provided valuable insight into systems, operations, and scale, it also reinforced an important realization:
The most successful dental organizations are not built by focusing only on production numbers and revenue goals.
They are built by focusing on people.
That experience became one of the driving forces behind the philosophy of Smile Obsession.

Built for Scale Without Losing the Personal Touch
As Smile Obsession continued to grow, Dr Patel and his COO Jackie recognized the importance of creating strong systems and centralized support that would allow every office to deliver a consistent, high quality patient experience.
Under the leadership of Chief Operating Officer Jackie, Smile Obsession developed a centralized operations center in OakBrook, IL designed to support all locations across the organization.
This centralized support structure helps coordinate:

- Technology implementation
